College Campuses Implementing More Security Measures

Every few years, the U.S. Department of Education’s Campus Safety and Security (CSS) releases data regarding campus crime. In 2015, the number of reported criminal offenses was 38,909. This is based on 6,701 institutions with 11,286 campuses. Of these offenses, 1,028 were reported as hate crimes and 14,721 were VAWA (Violence Against Women Act) offenses.

While these numbers have decreased slightly from the previous year, college campuses continue to implement more and more security measures to protect the safety of their students. For example, Dartmouth College tested a new multi-modal emergency notification system just last month, consisting of an outdoor mass notification and a campus-wide messaging service. This allows the college to alert students of possible threats, as well as communicate with students in danger. Aside from emergency notification systems, college campuses are also improving security measures through:

  • Increase in Security Guards
A security presence not only deters crimes, but offers the ability to act quickly in the event of a crime – whether it’s vandalism, assault, or another type of emergency. Today, college campuses are hiring nationwide security guards providers to implement more officers on campus, in parking lots, and outside of on-campus living spaces.
  • Stronger Access Control
Many campuses used proximity cards that can be swiped at an entrance to electronically unlock a door. However, these cards are often lost, stolen, or borrowed, resulting in unauthorized users gaining access to the property. Now, many campuses are implementing technology for cell phones that can be used as keys to gain access to proximity sensors. Phone lock codes and the reduced likelihood of it being stolen or lost make this access control technology a better option.
  • Implementing More Robust Video Surveillance
Newer video surveillance cameras today offer unparalleled sophistication, most of which can run on an IP data network. This means they are less expensive to make, install, and maintain, offering both wired and wireless solutions that are capable of transmitting HD-quality, full-color video streams. Video cameras in buildings and within intersections deter crime, as well as make it easier to track and prosecute the perpetrator.
