How to Become a Security Guard in Pennyslvania

Unarmed and Armed Security Guard Requirements in Pennsylvania

As a central hub to a variety of industries – such as steel, coal, and chocolate, as well as the more recent booming finance and banking companies – Pennsylvania is always in need of trained security guards. However, the process of becoming a security guard in Pennsylvania can be complex. Unlike other states, you must petition the Pennsylvania County Court for a specific Pennsylvania security guard license – the outcome is ultimately up to the judge presiding over your case.

A few basic security guard requirements in Pennsylvania include:

  • must be at least 18 years old
  • must be a U.S. citizen
  • no previous felonies or alcohol/drug abuse on your record
  • two valid forms of photo ID (driver’s license and passport)
  • letters verifying good moral from character witnesses
  • submission to a criminal background check (certified proof required)
  • submission to fingerprinting to the County Clerk’s office with a money order to the Pennsylvania State Police

The presiding judge will decide what type of training is required. While it is up to the judge to decide who is approved for an armed security guard license, any experience and training you can prove and submit proof of should help your chances of having your petition approved. Fees include a $17.50 fingerprint card and $200 for the Pennsylvania Security Guard License (due only if petition is approved). Once you’ve completed security guard requirements in Pennsylvania and become licensed, apply to join our team.
